pathfinder. A person who makes a path for others to follow, one who finds a way. The word derives from the name of a fic- tional character created by American novelist James Fenimore Cooper, not the other way around. Pathfinder is the name Cooper coined for his colorful character Natty Bumppo in his novel The Pathfinder (1840), because of Bumppo’s skill in find- ing his way through the wilderness. Before long the word was being used generally. |
