词汇 pawnbroker
词源
pawnbroker. Long before their common name was coined in medieval days, pawnbrokers operated under the familiar three golden balls still hanging over many of their shops. It was the Medici family who contributed the symbol of their profession, for Charlemagne made this the family coat of arms long before the Medici family became moneylenders, as a reward to one of their forebears for using a weapon made of three golden balls to kill a fearsome giant who attacked him. Pawnbroker itself has a more prosaic origin, deriving from pawn, “a pledge,” and broker, “agent,” and was first recorded in 1678.
