flopper. In American slang for over a century, a flopper can be a swindler; a beggar displaying or feigning a disability; or a person who switches political parties for his own benefit. Flopper is also another name for a flounder, a fish known for its flopping from one side to the other when caught and land- ed on the deck of a boat. Unrecorded anywhere I’ve looked, this last term was mentioned in the 1940s film Man on the Ledge. |
