词汇 | floorwalker |
词源 | floorwalker. “Dandified ushers,” the first department store floorwalkers were called, and in the 1890s that was often ex- actly what they were. Dressed in either a black frock or a cuta- way coat, with gray-striped trousers, a very high collar, and a rose in the buttonhole, the floorwalker was usually a spiffy, or smarmy, exceedingly polite living directory, who pompously patrolled the aisles, the arbiter elegantiarum of conduct and store etiquette. Charlie Chaplin knew the type well and por- trayed one in his film The Floorwalker. Today floorwalkers are more often called floor managers, their main job still the su- pervision of sales personnel and assistance of customers. |
