词汇 garden bed
词源
garden bed; bed of roses. The term garden bed probably owes its origin to the beds we sleep in, like the shape or pur- pose of the garden bed. However, the word bed itself may come from a Teutonic word meaning “a dugout place, a lair,” and the term garden bed could have come directly from there. English-speaking people have been using the expression since at least a.d. 1000. The expression to bed out plants is recorded as early as 1671 in a gardening manual but is probably much older. Shakespeare used the old phrase bed of roses, and it may have been popular centuries before him. It seems to have first been employed by the poet Robert Herrick and means a situa- tion of luxurious ease, a highly agreeable position of comfort or pleasure. A variant seldom heard anymore is a bed of flowers.
