词汇 | garbled |
词源 | garbled. The Arabic gharbala means to sift something or pu- rify it. The word became garble in English and by the 17th cen- tury came to mean to sift information selectively so that it is distorted or muddled. Soon the meaning of distorted was dis- carded and today garbled only means muddled, mixed up, unclear. One would suspect that the sound of garbled itself con- tributed to this final transformation. |
