词汇 speakeasy
词源
speakeasy. The word goes back 30 years or more before its use during Prohibition, to at least the 1880s. Samuel Hudson, a newspaperman of the day, said he first heard it in Pittsburgh, used by an old Irish woman who sold liquor without a license and told her clients to “spake asy” when they came to buy it. Over a century before this there were Irish spake-aisy shops or smugglers’ dens. Speakeasies were also called speaks during Prohibition. The original “spake-aisy” places may have been so named because patrons had to speak quietly when entering them to avoid alerting police and neighbors.
