Spahn and Sain and Pray for Rain. A baseball rhyme that rivals “Casey at the Bat.” Johnny Sain, a right-hander, and Warren Spahn, a left-hander, were the Boston Braves’ ace pitchers in their drive for the 1948 National League pennant. Sain would pitch one day, Spahn would pitch another, and all the Braves fans would pray for rain so that each hurler would have a chance to rest his arm. The Braves did win the pen- nant, though they lost the World Series to the Cleveland Indians. |
