speak for yourself, John. The famous words of the maid Pr- iscilla to John Alden, who, in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem “The Courtship of Miles Standish” (1858), courts her for his friend Miles Standish even though he, too, loves her. The full quote is “Why don’t you speak for yourself, John?” Alden does finally marry Priscilla without losing the friendship of Miles. The poem, incidentally, sold 15,000 copies on the first day of publication, an incredible number for that time. |
