| 词源 | Sooner State. A nickname for Oklahoma, after the “sooners” who “jumped the gun sooner” and sneaked over the border be- fore the lands there were thrown open to settlement by U.S. cit- izens at noontime on April 22, 1889. Many of the 20,000 people who came to claim land on that day found that “sooners” had gotten there before them. Indians, of course, were there sooner than anyone, for all the good it did them. Today residents of Oklahoma are called Sooners. |
