Solitary confinement in “the hole,” a cell removed from all others and often below ground, was a punishment originated by the state of Pennsylvania in the late 18th century. Suggested by the Quakers, “solitary” was consid- ered a reform measure at the time, replacing brutal floggings for incorrigible prisoners. |
