lady’s-mantle; lady chapel; lady fern. A lady’s-mantle (Al- chemilla) is a flowering plant whose large, serrated, and many- lobed leaves resemble “the mantle of Our Lady,” and a lady chapel is a chapel attached to a large church and dedicated to the Blessed Virgin. The delicate lady fern (Athyrium filix-femina) does not refer to the Virgin Mary, as is commonly believed, tak- ing its name from the legend that possession of its seeds could render a woman invisible. |
