词汇 | knish |
词源 | knish. A widely popular dish from Jewish cookery, consist- ing of dough stuffed with potato, cheese, or meat, etc., and baked or fried. The Yiddish word probably comes from the Ukrainian or Polish knysh, which, in turn, is of Turkish origin. Leo Rosten in The Joys of Yiddish (1968) also gives knish as a “vulgarism” for the vagina, and the American poet A. D. Fiske used “Anne Knish” as a pseudonym in Spectra (1916), a poetry collection he wrote with Harold Witter Bynner spoofing poet- ry of the day. |
