American poet and journalist Arthur Guiterman (1871–1943) popularized this expression, mean- ing “I knew him before he became rich or prominent,” in a parody he wrote of Whittier’s lines (in Maud Muller) “of all sad words of tongue or pen,/ The saddest are these: ‘It might have been.’ ” Wrote Guiterman, in A Poet’s Proverbs (1924): “Of all cold words of tongue or pen,/ The worst are these, ‘I knew him when.’ ” |
