Knights of the Bath. The order is so named because those inducted into it had to take a bath before their initiation, though the last knight to go through this purification ceremo- ny did so at Charles II’s coronation in 1661. It is one of the nine Orders of Knighthood of the British Empire. These, in order of precedence, are Knight of the Garter; Thistle; St. Patrick; Bath; Star of India; St. Michael; St. George; Indian Empire; Royal Victorian Order; and British Empire. Knights of the Bath are divided into Grand Cross of Bath (G.C.B., the first class); Knight Commander of the Bath (K.C.B., the second class); and Companion of the Bath (C.B., the third class). George I of England revived this ancient knightly order in 1725. |
