词源 | beam me up, Scotty. This has become a very popular humor- ous expression, often used on bumper stickers as well as in con- versation, for “get me out of here, free me from this mess,” etc. It originally requested transportation, a frequent order Captain Kirk gave to chief engineer “Scotty” Scott on the television se- ries Star Trek, which premiered in 1966. It meant that Scotty should transform Kirk’s body into energy. Interplanetary poly- glots will be interested to know that a 1996 video game, Star Trek Klingon, teaches players the Klingon language. Beam me up! in Klingon is Hljol! Beam me, up, Scotty, also meant “get me high.” See also klingon. |
