词汇 | bay laurel tree |
词源 | bay laurel tree. Because this tree (Laurus nobilis), the tree laurel of history, was sacred to the god Apollo it was thought to be immune to lightning. According to legend, Apollo fell in love with the beautiful Daphne, daughter of the river diety Pe- neos, who changed her into a bay laurel tree to protect her when she spurned the god’s advances. Apollo vowed that there- after he would always wear bay laurel leaves and that all who worshipped him should do the same. The legend inspired Ti- berius and other Roman emperors to wear wreaths of bay laurel as amulets during thunderstorms. Observation, however, has proved that the bay laurel tree is no more immune to lightning than any other tree. Another ancient superstition holds that the withering of a bay tree is an omen of death. The historian Ho- linshed noted that in 1399 old bay trees throughout England withered and then inexplicably grew green again. Shakespeare made use of this note in Richard II: “ ’Tis thought the king is dead. We’ll not stay—/The bay-trees in our country are with- ered.” See laurels. |
