Virgil sarcastically criticized the two mi- nor Roman poets Bavius and Maevius in his Third Eclogue and Maevius was further criticized by Horace in his Tenth Ep- ode, making their names forever synonyms for inferior poets or poetasters. In 1794 William Gifford wrote a fierce satire called The Baviad and followed it two years later with the Mae- viad. The works attacked the Della Cruscan school of poetry, founded by sentimental young English poets living in Flor- ence at the time. Ironically, the school bore the name of Flor- ence’s famous Accademia della Crusca (Academy of Chaff) whose object was purifying the Italian language, sifting away its chaff. By the way, Virgil himself was much criticized in his time; one critic published eight volumes consisting of resem- blances between lines in Virgil’s poems and earlier Roman poems.
