词汇 morse code
词源
Morse code. “What hath God wrought?” were the famous words sent in Morse code by its inventor on May 24, 1844. Samuel Finley Breese Morse (1791–1872) had begun experi- menting with his electric telegraph 12 years earlier, and Con- gress later granted the penniless inventor $30,000 to build the experimental line from Washington to Baltimore over which he sent his historic message. The Morse code he invented in conjunction with his telegraph was first called the Morse alpha- bet and is of course a system of dots and dashes representing letters, figures, and punctuation, the dash in the system equal- ing three times the length of the dot in time. Morse didn’t start out as a scientist. After graduation from Yale, he studied in En- gland and began a career in art, earning a reputation as a por- trait painter. Though his interest in electricity began during his college days, he was unaware that a number of telegraphs had been independently invented before 1830. Morse was forced to defend his invention in various patent suits, but emerged a vic- torious and very wealthy man.
