Montessori method. Italian physician and educator Maria Montessori (1870–1952), Italy’s first female doctor of medicine, became interested in the education of mentally handicapped children and opened a school for them in 1907 in the slums of Rome. This led to her method of educating all children by stressing development of a child’s own natural abilities and ini- tiative, often in play rather than by formal teaching methods. Her child-centered approach led to her book The Montessori Method (1909) and the development of hundreds of Montessori schools throughout the world.
