词汇 baby-kisser
词源
baby-kisser. Politicians have been baby-kissing since the first election, but the term doesn’t seem to have been used before the U.S. presidential election of 1884. The words were applied to Benjamin Butler, who ran on the independent Greenback- Labor ticket and came in a poor third behind Democrat Grover Cleveland and Republican James Blaine. “As a baby-kisser,” a contemporary newspaper observed, “Ben Butler is not a suc- cess.” One theory has it that the idea for the term appears in the Eatanswill election episode of Dickens’s Pickwick Papers (1837), although baby-kisser doesn’t appear there.
