polecat; polecat trail; wildcat trail. Though a polecat is a kind of weasel (Mustela putorius) in Europe, the word is a syno- nym for a skunk in the U.S. Its name comes from Latin pullus, “chicken,” plus cat, apparently due to the polecat’s taste for chicken. In skiing, polecat trail refers to an easy trail for begin- ners, without sharp turns or pitches, the opposite of wildcat trail. |
