词汇 | stirrup cup |
词源 | stirrup cup. A farewell drink of wine or liquor given to a mounted rider, feet in the stirrups and ready to depart. Stirrup, referring to an ancient device, derives ultimately from the ob- solete German word sty, “climb,” plus rope. This indicates that the first stirrups were looped ropes. The rider put his or her foot in one of the loops and climbed up on the horse’s back. See deoch-an-doris. |
