tender loving care (TLC). From Shakespeare’s Henry VI, Part 2, spoken by the king after a mob outside threatens to break in: “Go, Salisbury, and tell them all from me, / I thank them for thy tender loving care.” TLC is short for tender loving care. Nigel Rees in Mark My Words (2002) notes that one of his correspondents in the U.S. “recalls being told in the 1940s that there was a study done in foundling hospitals where the death rate was very high, which showed that when nurses picked up the babies and cuddled them more frequently, the death rate went down. This led to the prescription, TLC t.i.d. (three times a day; from the Latin ter in die).”
