词汇 | flying machine |
词源 | flying machine. The Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur, liked to call their epochal invention a flying machine, never an airplane, aeroplane, aerial ship, or aerial machine. The term fly- ing machine is recorded as far back as 1730. The name of the Wright’s plane, which on December 17, 1903, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, made the first powered flight in a heavier- than-air craft, was the Wright Flyer, an appellation they chose in honor of something so down-to-earth as a bicycle brand these bicycle shop owners (and high school dropouts) made and sold back in their Dayton, Ohio, store. A place with a hawk in it would be a wonderful location for the world’s first airplane flight, but the Wright flight actually took place not in Kitty Hawk, as is usually said, but on Kill Devil Hill, a place close by. |
