词汇 | buffalo nickel |
词源 | buffalo nickel. The old buffalo nickel, 1.2 billion of which were minted in the United States for 25 years starting in 1913, is among the handsomest of American coins, especially the re- alistic profile of the Indian chief on the coin’s front and the bi- son on the reverse. In February 2005, the U.S. Mint released a new buffalo nickel with several differences. The Indian on the original coin was actually a composite of three Native Ameri- can chiefs—Iron Tail, Big Tree, and Two Moons—who posed for sculptor James Earle Fraser in 1911. The bison’s name was Black Diamond. |
