词汇 | buffalo soldier |
词源 | buffalo soldier. An American Indian name for African- American soldiers stationed in the West. One explanation of the name is given by F. M. A. Roe in Army Letters (1872): “The officers say the negroes make good soldiers and fight like fiends . . . The Indians call them ‘buffalo soldiers,’ because their wooly heads are so much like the matted cushion that is be- tween the horns of the buffalo.” The Encyclopedia of African- American Heritage (2000) states “The name is said to have orig- inated with the Plains Indians, who likened the soldier’s bravery to that of the buffalo, and because the soldiers’ curly black hair was reminiscent of a buffalo mane.” |
