词汇 | flying fish |
词源 | flying fish. The name generally given to fishes of the Exo- coetidae family. These are the fish Kipling wrote about: “On the road to Mandalay / Where the flying fishes play.” However, they aren’t playing in their leaps out of the water; they are trying to escape hunters like the dorados that are pursuing them. Vibrat- ing their tail fins at a rate of 50 beats a second, these “dragon- flies of the deep” build up momentum; with both pairs of “wings” spread they soon become airborne and glide over the waves at a speed of up to 40 miles an hour. They can cover the length of three football fields, jumping as high as 45 feet into the air. They hit the water tail first, scull again to regain propul- sion, and then fly another 25 feet or so, taking about 45 seconds to cover one-quarter of a mile in the course of 10 or so leaps. |
