词汇 | medusa |
词源 | Medusa; medusae. It is because of their labyrinths of poison- ous tentacles that the free-swimmer stages of all jellyfish are called “medusae,” after the writhing serpentine tresses of the Medusa of Greek mythology, one of the Gorgon’s heads that turned to stone anything that met its gaze. It is just possible that the Medusa itself was conceived by some ancient mariner who had encountered a particularly formidable pelagic speci- men. At any rate, it has long been known that the poisons of certain jellyfish are very virulent and have inflicted fatal inju- ries to humans. See spineless as a jellyfish. |
