sirens. Represented in mythology as birds with the heads of women, the Sirens were the three daughters of the Greek sea god Phorcu (Achelous). Perched on their pleasant island, they lured mariners to death, the sailors enchanted by the Sirens’ song crashing their ships against the rocks. In rare instances they could be defeated, as when Orpheus, the legendary poet, outwitted the Sirens by playing his spellbinding lyre over the sound of their song. The name siren is now applied to any sexy, wilful woman. |
