shut out. Though the term is most commonly heard in base- ball for a game in which the losing team doesn’t score, shut out probably has its origins in horse racing. First recorded in 1855, shut out has long referred to a bettor who arrives at a track win- dow when it is too late to bet, thus being shut out by the closed window. Today someone who fails to make any headway in an endeavor is said to be shut out. |
