barbecue. Here’s an English word that comes from the lan- guage of the extinct Haitian Taino tribe. The tribe smoked meat on a framework of sticks called a barbacoa—at least the name sounded like that to Spanish pirates who visited Haiti in the mid-17th century. Barbacoa came to mean the cooking of the meat itself and passed into English as the American barbecue. The Tainos also gave us the word potato, which was first their batata. |
