barbershop quartet. The “Sweet Adeline” in the famous song of the same name was originally “Sweet Rosalie.” Richard Ger- ard and Henry Armstrong (both fl. early 20th century) wrote “You’re the Flower of My Heart, Sweet Rosalie” in 1903, tried to sell it and couldn’t. When they decided to name the song’s her- oine in honor of popular prima donna Adeline Patti and short- ened the title to “Sweet Adeline,” it sold and eventually became the barbershop quartet hit of all time. It became so famous that all close harmony was called “barbershop harmony,” a term not much heard today. |
