词汇 | sheridan-s ride |
词源 | Sheridan’s Ride. General “Little Phil” Sheridan’s jet black gelding Rienzi stands stuffed in the Smithsonian Institution to- day, having won fame comparable to General Robert E. Lee’s mount Traveler. Rienzi was ridden by Sheridan in their famous ride to rally Union troops to victory at Cedar Creek in 1864, a breakneck ride of over 19 miles that rivaled Paul Revere’s and became one of the most dramatic in military history thanks largely to poet and artist Thomas Buchanan Read, whose ro- mantic (often singsong) narrative poem “Sheridan’s Ride” and painting of the same subject glamorized both man and horse. In urging his men to cease retreating and face the enemy, Sheridan is said to have cried: “Boys turn back, face the other way—I am going to sleep in their camp tonight or in hell!” Sheridan always denied he uttered such “profane” words, but he did his denying in puritanical times. |
