词汇 | blondin |
词源 | Blondin. Blondin was the stage name of one of the greatest tightrope walkers of all time, the Frenchman Jean François Gravelet (1824–97). The Inimitable Blondin, whose name be- came a synonym for a star acrobat or tightrope walker, began his career at a mere five years of age and performed many great feats thereafter. The first man to cross Niagara Falls on a tight- rope, on June 30, 1859, he later made the crossing while push- ing a wheelbarrow, twirling an umbrella, and with another man on his back. The rope was 1,100 feet long, only three inches thick, and was suspended 160 feet above the falls. Blondin is still used occasionally to describe an accomplished acrobat or nimble person. |
