affiliate. “Adopted” is the meaning of the Latin affileatus, composed of ad, “to,” and filius, “son,” from which the word af- filiate derives. Thus a smaller company affiliated with a larger one could be said to have been adopted by the parent corpora- tion. The word is first recorded by Tobias Smollett in Gil Blas (1761). |
