词汇 | main street |
词源 | Main Street. Main Street is the typically American designa- tion for the principal thoroughfare in a town, while the British synonym is High Street (the high denoting importance, not ele- vation). In early Colonial days, along the East Coast, there were High Streets, some surviving today, but high came to suggest elevation in America as the pioneers moved inland toward the mountains. The most famous Main Street is found in Sinclair Lewis’s novel of the same name, published in 1920. Even New York City has it Main Streets; in fact, Manhattan is the only one of New York City’s five boroughs that doesn’t have a Main Street. Over the years Main Roads, Main Drags, and Main Stems have also been added. |
