词汇 | mailbox |
词源 | mailbox; pillarbox. The streetcorner mailbox or pillarbox, as the Brits call it, was invented and named by British novelist An- thony Trollope (1815–82) about 1858 (not by author Tobias Smollett, as is sometimes said). The American name mailbox for the collection box wasn’t recorded until 1872. Trollope, a Post Office official, wrote over 50 novels in addition to holding his job, rising at 5:30 every morning to write for 2½ hours be- fore going to work. |
