mahogany. No one knows where this foremost of all cabinet woods originated or where the word mahogany came from. Some say the source of the word may be a non-Carib language of the West Indies, while others say it is perhaps of Mayan ori- gin. The strong durable wood comes mainly from two species of trees of the genus Swietenia: the West Indies mahogany (Swi- etenia mahagoni), and the Honduras mahogany of Central and South America (Swietenia macrophylla). Lumber from these valuable trees has been used by the Spanish since at least 1514, but the word mahogany wasn’t recorded until over a century later. Mahogany also means a reddish-brown color like the tree’s.
