词源	asphodel; Jacob’s rod. The asphodel of the ancients so fre- quently encountered in poetry is Asphodeline luta, a perennial yellow-flowered herb sometimes called Jacob’s rod. In ancient times the dead were thought to sustain themselves on the roots of asphodels, and the flowers were often planted on graves. In- terestingly, the much better known daffodil bears a name that is a corruption of asphodel.
