词汇 | ashes |
词源 | ashes; cremains. Ashes are the grayish-white to black residue that remains after something is burned, including human re- mains after cremation. The word derives from the Old English aesce. Cremains are the remains of a cremated corpse. The best story I know about cremains involves humorist and drama crit- ic Robert Benchley (1889–1945). “I can hear him laughing now,” Benchley’s wife said upon reaching the Nantucket grave- yard where his ashes were to be buried—and then inspecting the open burial urn she was transporting. As a kind of cosmic farewell joke, the ashes in the urn had blown away en route and she had been driving for miles with an empty vessel. |
