Aristarch. A very pedantic or very severe critic. This epony- mous word comes from the name of Aristarchus of Samothrace (ca. 217–145 b.c.), a Greek scholar, critic, and the chief librarian of the Alexandrian library for over 30 years. It is from his edit- ing of Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, among other great works, that Aristarch won his fame or infamy. |
