Argentina. The South American country takes its name from the Latin argentum, “silver,” after the precious metal Spanish explorers found there. Its official name, bestowed in 1816, is La Republica Argentina, “The Silver Republic.” One legend holds that llamas grazing on Mount Posi in 1545 up- rooted shrubs beneath which there was a vein of silver ore. Spanish prospectors noticed the ore, and the mining of silver began. |
