fennel. Finocchio or fennel can be traced to the Latin word feniculum, meaning “product of the meadow.” “Florence fen- nel,” a sweet variety, is often called “finocchio.” Anciently held to be an aphrodisiac, fennel was also emblematic of flattery, was thought to clear the eyesight, and was said to be the fa- vorite food of serpents. “To eat conger and fennel” (two sup- posed aphrodisiacs) was held to be especially stimulating.
