词汇 | you couldn’t detect my interest with a high-powered telescope |
词源 | you couldn’t detect my interest with a high-powered telescope. Sometimes used to indicate that the speaker couldn’t care less about something, that one has no interest in it at all. I’ve found no proof of this, but the expression may derive from Algonquin wit George S. Kaufman’s reply to popular singer Ed- die Fisher on a TV show when Fisher asked him what he could do about women refusing to date him because he looked so young. “Mr. Fisher,” Kaufman said, “on Mount Wilson there is a telescope that can magnify the most distant stars up to twenty- four times the magnification of any previous telescope. This re- markable instrument was unsurpassed until the construction of the Mount Palomar telescope, an even more remarkable instru- ment of magnification. Owing to advances and improvements in optical technology, it is capable of magnifying the stars to four times the magnification and resolution of the Mount Wil- son telescope—Mr. Fisher, if you could somehow put the Mount Wilson telescope inside the Mount Palomar telescope, you still wouldn’t be able to detect my interest in your problem.” |
