make a scene. The display involved in making a scene, “mak- ing a disturbance, usually in public,” suggests that the expres- sion is theatrical in origin. Strong emotions often portrayed in short scenes of stage plays probably are responsible for the phrase. In fact, the first literary use of the idea is in Samuel Foote’s farce The Liar (1762), where one of the characters says, “We parted this moment. Such a scene!” |
