yawp. Walt Whitman famously wrote that he would “sound my barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world.” Yawp refers to a sharp cry, a bark, a yelp; or loud, coarse talk. Yawp is sometimes used as the cry of a gull lifting its head and letting loose, sqwarking at the universe. Gulls often make a cacophony of sounds while floating in the water or flying high: yawping, barking, yelping, mewling, even cawing like crows. |
