Properly pronounced to rhyme with care (though one often hears it pronounced to rhyme with car), yare is usually applied to a sailing vessel and means shipshape, ready, deriv- ing from the Old English gearu meaning the same. “Our ship is tyte and yare,” wrote Shakespeare in The Tempest. Katharine Hepburn pronounced it to rhyme with car in Philadelphia Story.
