Arabs, Indians, and Orientals were called wogs by the British during the heyday of their empire, or at least since about 1830, the derogatory appellation wog said to be a word formed from the first letters of wily (or westernized) Oriental gentle- man. Another O.E.D. suggestion is gollywog, “with reference to frizzy or curly hair,” wog “indeed being a nursery shortening of golliwog.” |
