词汇 | witch city |
词源 | Witch City. A nickname for Salem, Massachusetts, where in 1692 a wave of hysterical witch-hunting led to the hanging of 19 innocent people. This was the beginning of witch-hunting in America, but the practice had been common elsewhere since ancient times. Thousands were executed worldwide from 1450 to 1650. In England “Witch-Finder General” Matthew Hopkins (1621–47), as he named himself, hanged more than 100 people in one year. Since about 1920 witch-hunting has been applied to any effort to expose subversion or disloyalty, usually based on little evidence. |
